Thursday, November 3rd

Good evening, fabulous 1st/2nd parents! We have had a fun-filled week and I seriously can't believe we are in the month of November! Time flies with this class! Coming Up:

NO SCHOOL NEXT FRIDAY: This is just a reminder that there will be no school, next Friday, November 11th due to Veteran’s Day. Our daycare will be open, so if you need childcare be please respond to this e-mail or let Brooke know at the daycare.

VETERAN’S DAY ASSEMBLY: Sonshine Elementary School will have a Veteran’s Day Assembly on Thursday, November 10th at 10 AM. If you would like to attend you are more than welcome! Also, if you have any friends or relatives who are or were in the military, please invite them as we will be honoring our Veterans!

Also, please send any photos (scanning them and sending via email would be best) of any family members in the military now or who have served in the past. We would like to collect these for a slide-show.

Saturday, November 20th, 11 am: Harvest Dinner at Faith Baptist Church

Please keep the small toy items for Operation Christmas Child coming in! We are asking that each child in our class bring in 3 small toys to help fill our shoeboxes! Thank you to those of you who have done this already, so exciting!

Coming Up in Reading:

1st Grade:

Coming Up in 2nd Grade Reading:

                                                                   Spelling List:

In math, both groups will be practicing skip counting (we have an awesome song we have been singing together)! In first grade, we will be counting on (1,2, and 3) to add, or, more commonly known as using mental math. We will also be using a number line to add, using pennies to add, and adding doubles! In 2nd grade, we will be taking apart 10's to add, regrouping ones as tens, and adding to a two-digit number. These can be tricky concepts, and we may need to spend more than one day on each lesson to make sure we are at mastery and ready to move forward. But it is exciting territory to be in! So proud of these hard-working explorers!

Speaking of exploring, our continent focus this month is North America. That means we will also be studying our country, the United States of America! We are starting a novel study on the Magic Treehouse Book, "Thanksgiving on Thursday". We will be focusing on honoring our veterans this week and citizenship.

In Bible, we will be learning more about Joshua. Our verse this week:

Highlights from our week:

We worked on a STEM project in which we took our recent study of spiders to the test! Teams constructed webs using only dental floss and scissors. They realized what detailed engineering goes into seemingly simple spider webs! God's creatures are amazing! The kids did some amazing work too!

We made our own obstacle courses for PE!

Lots of journal-sharing!

                                                       We had a wonderful week!!!
