The journey has begun!

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend, fabulous 1st/2nd parents! I feel like I have a million things to share with you! First of all, we had a wonderful week in our class! It has been fun getting to know all of our new friends and catching up with our old friends! Kiddos have been bringing their all-about-me bags in and sharing them when we have extra time. If your child hasn't brought it back yet, don't worry, there's still time! They can return it anytime over the next few weeks to share.

SHARE-DAY!

Speaking of sharing, Monday is share-day. We will keep having our special share time every Monday afternoon. The kids love it and it is a wonderful way for them to build community by getting to know one another better and practice public-speaking. I would like students to limit their share items to two items so that we have time to listen to all of our friends!

Coming Up this Week:

Weekly Theme: Community
This month's continent: Australia

In Bible, we will be studying Genesis and how Abraham listened to and obeyed God. Our memory verse is Psalm 78:1. Please send students with a Bible to use for our Bible lessons. If they need one, please be sure to let us know!

READING:

1st Grade Reading:
Please review high-frequency words and spelling word nightly. Please read to your child or have your child read to you every day!

2nd Grade Reading:
Please review high-frequency words and spelling word nightly. Please read to your child or have your child read to you every day!

Math: In first grade math, we will discover different ways to make nine using manipulatives and we will work on addition problems. In second-grade math, we will use number lines for addition and subtraction and review making groups of tens. We will begin our Math Daily 3 rotations and students will have the opportunity to practice what we learn in our math lesson by themselves and then with other students. Please work on counting to 100, counting by tens, and skip-counting at home. You will see homework pages come home for math and these are optional to return, but I really encourage you to do these with your children and elaborate on the content if possible. Last year, one family made awesome additional problems within the same operation we were studying and it was delightful to see. Talking about math with your children and demonstrating different ways to arrive at the same answer is very beneficial!

Green Folders: Please check your child's green folder every night for important papers. Please return anything that requires a signature or orders in this folder. It is good if you remind your child if there is a paper to return, but we will check green folders in the morning and I will make sure they have them before coming into class. They should be emptied nightly. Thank you!

Being on Time Goes a Long Way!
It's so important to start our morning off right. When students are on time to school, they have more time to settle into their day. Our classroom doors open at 8:15 and students work on journals during this time. They also use the restroom, get a drink of water, and basically get comfortable and cozy in their classroom. We value punctuality at Sonshine Christian and want our students to make the most of their learning time. Starting next week, the tardy slip procedure will return. Students who enter the building after 8:30 will be given a tardy slip by Mrs. Warner and will then give it to their teacher. It is then recorded and goes onto their report cards. I have to say that I have been super impressed with the families in our classroom and their dedication to getting to school on time! We are building good habits for life!
